The metaverse promises new opportunities for digital interaction, commerce, and value creation. But which business models are most effective in turning these opportunities into sustainable economic success?

The metaverse is expected to become a major economic ecosystem, with studies projecting significant value creation over the coming decade. While adoption remains limited today, platforms such as Roblox, Fortnite, and Second Life already demonstrate how virtual economies can generate sustainable revenue. Research by Weinberger and Holl (2025) identifies freemium and add-on models as the most influential business models, driven by users’ growing willingness to invest in digital identities, virtual goods, and immersive experiences.

Several mechanisms underpin value creation in the metaverse: digital self-expression, new forms of social interaction, verified ownership of virtual assets, immersive experiences through VR and AR, remote service delivery, and the increasing importance of virtual locations and visibility. Together, these mechanisms enable multiple business model patterns.

Freemium models and microtransactions currently dominate consumer-facing metaverse platforms. Users access core services for free while paying for premium features, avatar customization, exclusive content, or virtual experiences. Platforms such as Roblox and Fortnite have demonstrated that digital goods can generate substantial revenues while fostering creator ecosystems and user engagement.

Subscription models provide recurring revenue through premium memberships, exclusive content, or access to virtual services. Examples include Roblox Premium and Meta Quest+, which strengthen customer loyalty while enabling long-term platform development. As metaverse services mature, subscriptions are expected to grow, particularly in professional and enterprise applications.

Trading virtual goods and NFTs represents another core revenue stream. Users purchase, exchange, and own digital assets such as avatar items, collectibles, or virtual land. The value of these goods is often linked to scarcity, exclusivity, and social status. While speculative NFT-driven markets have shown volatility, digital ownership remains a key building block of the metaverse economy.

Platform ecosystems create value by connecting creators, businesses, and users. Platforms earn revenue through transaction fees, commissions, and virtual currencies, while benefiting from network effects. Roblox exemplifies how user-generated content can power large-scale virtual economies and continuous innovation.

Advertising and brand experiences are emerging as important complementary models. Instead of traditional advertising, brands increasingly engage users through immersive events, virtual stores, and interactive experiences. Such approaches combine entertainment, marketing, and commerce in ways that can strengthen both customer engagement and brand awareness.

Beyond these dominant approaches, additional opportunities emerge through virtual services, business-to-business applications, and creator-driven economies. Virtual training, consulting, collaboration environments, and metaverse-as-a-service offerings demonstrate how organizations can generate value beyond entertainment-focused use cases.

Overall, the most effective metaverse business models combine user engagement, digital ownership, creator participation, and recurring revenue streams. Platforms that successfully integrate freemium access, virtual goods, subscriptions, and ecosystem-based value creation are likely to play a central role in the future metaverse economy.
