This situation highlights a broader shift. Virtual worlds and Extended Reality are no longer just visualisations or simulations; they are digital interaction spaces in which humans are embedded as part of the system. This applies to Industry 5.0 workers, operators, and collaborators across many domains. If humans are part of these interaction worlds, then modelling only machines and processes is not sufficient. The human must also be part of the digital representation.
Cognitive‑inspired Human Digital Twins focus on integrating human states, such as attention and cognitive workload, into digital interaction worlds, acknowledging that full human simulation remains a complex, multi‑disciplinary research challenge. This perspective opens a path toward Human Digital Twins that aim to represent and respond to how humans actually interact within virtual environments.

Adopting AI into working routines in a reasonable and economical manner will be crucial for small and big businesses. However, a recent study by the OECD shows that large firms are much faster in adopting AI technology than smaller companies. The study also shows that the obstacles to productive AI use differ depending on the company size. In a study for the project “Zentrum Zukunft der Arbeitswelt”, our colleagues from the University of Stuttgart IAT found that even German small and medium enterprises (SMEs) face a wide range of obstacles that hinder faster AI adoption. Thus, there is no quick and easy solution for companies that genuinely want to benefit from the technology. Especially SMEs may need different tools and formats of support at different stages on their AI learning journey.
Companies need evaluation instruments to steer through demanding AI transformation processes. Often, practitioners face a conflict between picking tools with very few items that are easy and fast to answer but which may be of little use – and longer tools that really could help but are difficult to vouch for. We offer an approach to deal with this issue.
